The Noble Varieties and Their Kindred

Understanding the world's great grape varieties — their character, their heartlands, and the wines they create

There are thousands of named grape varieties in the world — ampelographers have catalogued over 10,000 distinct cultivars — yet a handful of so-called "noble" grapes have come to dominate fine wine culture. Understanding them is the most efficient path to navigating the world's wine regions with confidence.

Among white varieties, Chardonnay reigns as the most planted fine wine grape on earth. In Burgundy it achieves its most celebrated expressions: the mineral austerity of Chablis, the rich, hazelnut-inflected grandeur of Montrachet. In Champagne it provides the structural backbone of the finest blanc de blancs. Across California, Australia, and beyond, it adapts its character to climate and winemaker alike.

Riesling is among the world's most versatile and age-worthy whites. From the towering slate slopes of the Mosel it produces wines of gossamer delicacy and extraordinary longevity. In Alsace it delivers power and aromatics; in Clare Valley, Australia, a steely, lime-driven intensity. Given time, great Riesling develops petrol-like notes — "kerosene" — that paradoxically signal transcendent complexity.

Among reds, Cabernet Sauvignon provides the structural backbone of Bordeaux's Left Bank — cassis, cedar, graphite, and formidable tannin. Pinot Noir, notoriously difficult to grow, rewards patience with the most silken, perfumed, and emotionally resonant red wines on earth. Nebbiolo — the grape of Barolo and Barbaresco — is perhaps the most terroir-transparent variety of all: iron, roses, tar, and a tannin that can seem eternal in youth but resolves over decades into wines of breathtaking elegance.

To know the grapes is to possess the map that makes the wine world navigable.

“To know the grapes is to possess the map that makes the entire wine world navigable — from Burgundy's limestone slopes to the volcanic soils of Etna.”
